fantastic value

i have about ten hard drives. im a tech geek and this is easily my favorite. i picked it because of the RAID capabilities... this one is for storing important files so i wanted something that was redundant. this thing is fast, very quiet!, and stays cooler than all of my other drives! go simpletech! buy it now... for less than $250 it is a STEAL

So far so awesome (briefly!)

I bought this adorable little jobby to expand my multimeadia collection. It's very good with USB, but the presence of an eSATA port brings it to the next level. I'm going to use it with an HP mediasmart home server (which has an eSATA port) to stream it to my TV. I might even buy another one. Nice nice nice. EDIT: This thing spun itself melty inside the first year of heavy use. I went through simpletech's RMA procedure since it was under warrantee, and they send me a "new" one. The replacement ground itself into dust, losing all the stuff I had backed up off the old one, WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK after I plugged it in. I would not recommend this again.

Great product, documentation is terrible though

Drive has been running great for more than 6 months now with heavy use. I have it set to RAID 1 (500GB mirrored). My only complaint is that the documentation that came with the drive was terrible and described almost nothing. The drive comes set up for 1TB RAID0, changing to 500GB RAID1 took a very long time to finish, but once it was done (solid white light), it was good to go.

Disaster recovery complete

4 stars because first one I ordered gave a "USB device not recognized" error and ad to be returned. Second arrived and was recognized but did not have any softare installed. I called customer support and they e-mailed me the software to downlaod. I then backed up all of my files (around 30GB) which was around 1.5 hours with the USB connection. 3 weeks later my system was wrecked by an IT specialist from my company and had to be re-imaged. Entire internal hard drive cleared. Sickenng feeling went away as the restore function completely replaced all of my files to original look and feel before the crash. On;y data lost was a few photos that I had not backed up. Job well done. 4 stars (not five) for the start up flail.

No Problems So Far

Maybe I got lucky for a change, but I've had no problems. Perhaps it's because I didn't order it from Amazon. Recent Amazon orders I've gotten have been poorly packaged thus subjecting the items to impact damage. I'm using the drive in "mirrored" vs. "striping" which is the default. It takes a couple hours to reformat the discs, then no further setup is needed. Other that the little fan inside being rather noisy, it's been good for the 6 months or so that I've had it.
